IELTS test in Canada – January 2015 (General Training)

An IELTS test taker from Canada (thanks, J!) remembered the following information about a very recent IELTS exam:

Listening testIELTS test in Canada

Section 1. An arrangement for a birthday party.

Section 2. About the sport of Curling.
Questions: filling in blanks, multiple choice.

Section 3. Seracini investigation of Da Vinci code painting.

Section 4. A discussion about environmental sustainability.
Questions: short-answer questions (no more than 1 word).

Reading test

Passage 1. Information about different sport clubs such as a fitness club, a swimming club, and also a tennis club.
Questions: match clubs to descriptions.

Passage 2. About some prehistoric events in the Sahara desert. It talked about Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods, and rock engravings and paintings of that era.

Passage 3. About the importance of letter-writing ability, for example a cover letter for gaining employment.
Questions: short-answer questions (no more than 2 words).

Passage 4. About grievances resolution with an employer.

Writing test

Writing task 1 (a letter)

You have visited another city in your country. Prior to the visit you requested some information from a tourist centre, but the information was incorrect. Write a letter to the manager of the centre and say

- What information were you looking for?
- What was incorrect in it?
- What happened to you because of it?

Writing Task 2 (an essay)

Many people spend a lot of money on clothes, haircuts, and beauty products to enhance their appearance. Some people think that it is a good way to spend money, while others think that there is a better way to spend it. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Interview

- What is your full name?
- Can I see your ID?
- Where are you from?
- Do you work or study?
- What kind of work do you do?
- Do you like it? Why?
- Do you do household chores?
- Did you do chores as a child?
- What could be done to make chores fun for kids?
- When did you meet you best friend?
- What do you and your friends usually do together?
- Would you prefer a small or large circle of friends? Why?

Cue Card

Describe an older person whom you know well and respect. Please say

- Who is he/she?
- What do you know about his/her younger life?
- What do you usually do together?

Discussion

- Why do you respect and admire this person?
- What qualities should people looking after the elderly have?
- How could neighbours help the elderly?
- How is technology helping the elderly to live better?
- What can be difficult to accept for old people in the modern lifestyle?

We had to compare the data. Writing task 2 (an essay) A recent study showed that both developed and developing countries prosper because of the economic growth. People from developing countries are happier than before while people from developed countries are not as happy as they were in the past. Why is this happening? How can this situation be improved?
